I just read some reports on the new WWF Saturday night show - thank you Rick Scaia! - and if these reports are indeed true and not just Vince working us Internet smarks, it'll stink big time.

The announcements have it just being used as a two-hour replacement for Livewire and Superstars... in other words, just a 2-hour block of recaps of the angles played on RAW and Smackdown.

Let's see: those two particular shows had abysmal ratings... now fans will flock to watch (or record) the same thing in a two hour block? I don't think so!

It has to be a swerve. At least, I hope it is!

I missed a day of posting here. Sorry; Blogger was down when I tried to reach it.

A few bits of news hit while I was off:

  • Lawler made the official announcement: he and Stacy "Kat" Carter have broken up.

It doesn't reallt come as a surprise... he's at least 30 years her elder. What could they really have in common?

  • From the Wrestling Observer:

Rhonda Singh, who also wrestled under the names Bertha Faye in the WWF and Monster Ripper in Japan and Mexico, passed away this past Friday at the age of 40. Singh, in the mid-80s when she headlined in Japan was nicknamed the female Terry Gordy because of her size and brawling style before later becoming a comedy figure in the WWF and the butt of some jokes in WCW.

I never got to see her stint in Japan, only her days here as Bertha Faye, where she was just played up as "the gross fat lady who bumps into opponents".

I think this more shows the unwillingness of Vince McMahon to not let any female wrestler shine - especially if she isn't a thin hottie with massive implants. As a result, we never got to see what Rhonda could really do.

It seems very likely that Jerry "The King" Lawler and his wife Stacey "Kat" Carter may well have broken up; he doesn't come right out and confirm it on his site, but he quotes from his old friend Jackie Fargo: "If you bring your wife into wrestling, she'll leave you."

I think he didn't come right out and say it because it may not be a done deal; that's why I won't say it is either.

Another bright light of wrestling is gone too young: Dennis Coraluzo died at the too-young age of 48.

The name might not be familiar to you. He was the head booker for NWA New Jersey for years, one of the hottest non-televised promotions of the recent past.

He was also partially linked to ECW when it was known as Eastern Championship Wrestling. He was involved in the Championship tournament that saw Shane Douglas become the NWA champion, only to throw it away to call the NWA dead, with the birth of Extreme Championship Wrestling, with him now their first World champion.

Dennis played an important role in 1990s wrestling. He'll be missed.

Not surprisingly, the return of the Rock on RAW and his alliance with the WWF wasn't done in a way that would insult the fans...

He re-upped, but not while being nice to Vince McMahon. No, Vince got a Rock Bottom for his trouble. Just when we thought Rocky might be going to the Alliance though, he did the same thing to Shane - following it up with the People's Elbow before announcing he was siding with the WWF.

Add to that a tremendous match between Rob Van Dam and Tajiri, more gold for X-Punk (OK... it wasn't all good), a PPV-calibre match between Kurt Angle and Booker T, and we had a pretty good show!
